THE CHARACTERS

The main character considers her life’s timing unique—on the cusp of technology’s cutting edge, yet reminiscent of an era before the internet dominated everything.
Miss Oliver teaches Reflective Writing to thirty Juniors. Although some fill minor roles, every one (of the fourteen featured students) stands for something significant. Black, brown, special needs, LGBTQ, and teachers' lives matter. Ethnic and linguistic diversity, gender sensitivity, and a spectrum of ability are represented in Room 18.
There are two other important instructors who shape the story: a married mentor and a sexy single coworker. Influential figures who don't attend Heart High play their parts as well.

A
reoccurring theme is standing up for people and issues. Inspired by historical figures, students write letters of concern to the U.S. president, timely topics worth researching further. By giving these teens room to develop a polished political voice, the assignment offers an analytical alternative to instant messaging and social-media posts.
